Describe your company in brief and tell us how its core values align with those of the Postgres community
Steadion exists for the moments you never notice, the systems that just keep working. We create and support reliable data environments so our customers can focus on their business, not their databases. Reliability above all. Stability and calm. Experience over promises. What matters the most: “Your data, always on.” is the focus of our experts who care. 24/7 Managed Services, ad-hoc consultancy, Cloud migrations, Database Reviews, ... STEADION delivers decades of experience on different database technologies, from which PostgreSQL is one of them.
We want to be experts driven by passion, just like the people in the Postgres community. Proud to be a database expert, proud to work with PostgreSQL. Always with reliability as a top priority.
The PostgreSQL community is well known for sharing knowledge and helping each other. We like that way of working. We are independent from any database vendor and always try to find the solution that fits the customer best.
How did you choose to build your business around PostgreSQL? When did it
happen?
A long time ago (even before the year 2000, and even before STEADION existed as a separate company within the Cronos Group) it all started with Oracle. That time most customers had Oracle for their main applications. As time went by, we saw more and more customers also embracing other database technologies. That’s where we started to do so. Both the Microsoft SQL Server team and our Opensource team were born.
The last 3 years we get ever more requests about PostgreSQL. The strength of STEADION is the knowledge of other database technologies, as we can help customers convert from one technology to PostgreSQL.
That’s why we recently invested in additional PostgreSQL knowledge by having 10 people taking an intensive course.
What does your company care for most as a business? Tell us more about
the philosophy behind it.
What we care about most, above any specific technology or service line, is reliability that our clients can stop thinking about. Our tagline — "Your Data, Always On" — is not a marketing flourish; it describes the actual outcome we're organized around. A database is rarely the part of the business that gets celebrated, but it's almost always the part that, if it fails, brings everything else to a halt: patient records, financial transactions, production lines and at the end also customer trust.
Everything is organized around our tagline "Your Data, Always On": we need our "experts who care" to "create and support reliable data environments so our customers can focus on their business". We make sure people get the chance to grow in their passion, it's one of the reasons we'll attend to PGDay Lowlands.
Why did you choose to support PGDay Lowlands this year? What makes this
conference special?
Actually STEADION is rather new as a brand/name, as it brings together Exitas and Monin, two established Belgian database specialists with decades of combined experience (both part of the Cronos Group). It's time to show the community who we are.
PostgreSQL is an important part of our strategy, so we wanted to be present at one of the main PostgreSQL events in our region (we’re located in Belgium).
What makes PGDay Lowlands special is the community itself. You’ll meet contributors, DBAs, architects and developers who use PostgreSQL in real production environments. That makes the discussions interesting because they are based on real experience. We hope to share our own experience, but we also expect to learn a lot from the other people attending the event.
How is your team going to spending their time in Utrecht outside of
the conference talks?
Besides the conference itself, some of our colleagues also want to enjoy some time in Utrecht (and are even thinking to book a hotel). It is a beautiful city, so we will probably go for a walk and enjoy a good Belgian beer (maybe we’ll try a Dutch beer too ).
For us, a conference is not only about the sessions. Some of the most interesting conversations happen during the breaks, over dinner or with a drink after the last session. Those informal moments give you the most value.
We also want to spend time talking with people from the PostgreSQL community. Not to sell something, but to understand what people are working on, what challenges they have and what they expect from a database partner. We think listening is just as important as talking.
What is your team’s most anticipated feature in the next major release
of PostgreSQL and why?
For our team, the answer is easy: asynchronous I/O.
A large part of our work is helping customers get the best possible performance from their PostgreSQL databases. Because of that, we are always interested in changes that can make a real difference in production environments. Asynchronous I/O is one of those changes.
For our customers, this means they may be able to get better performance without changing their hardware. That is always good news.
