How did you choose to build your business around PostgreSQL? When did it happen?

We recognized very early on that PostgreSQL was something special. Back in 2006, as enterprise demand for a highly extensible, standards-compliant open-source database began to surge, we introduced Navicat for PostgreSQL. We saw a gap in the market: developers loved the power of Postgres but needed a streamlined, graphical interface to efficiently manage its complex architecture, relationships, and data modeling. It has been a core pillar of our product lineup ever since. Today, PostgreSQL users rely on Navicat for PostgreSQL for seamless database management, Navicat Data Modeler to design robust table structures, and Navicat Monitor to track database performance.

Where is PostgreSQL going to achieve a lot of progress in the next few years? Will your company be a part of it as a contributor?

PostgreSQL is making incredible strides in scaling—particularly distributed workloads—and serving as the foundational database for AI and machine learning via vector search. Navicat’s contribution comes in the form of accessibility and tooling. As Postgres adds complex capabilities, we continuously evolve our UI/UX and management tools to ensure developers can easily visualize, monitor, and deploy these new features without getting bogged down in command-line complexity.

Does your company have a product built on top of PostgreSQL? What makes it stand out?

Our flagship products, Navicat for PostgreSQL and Navicat Premium, are dedicated graphical tools for managing Postgres environments. What makes them stand out is our relentless focus on user experience. From our sophisticated visual Data Modeler to our seamless Data Synchronization and Migration tools, we turn complex database administration into intuitive, click-driven workflows. We are also bridging the gap between human intent and Postgres execution with our new AI Assistant and Ask AI features. These tools allow users to interact with their databases using natural language to generate queries, instantly debug code mistakes, and optimize overall performance.

Which feature has become the best fit for your business in the latest major version of Postgres? Why?

The continuous enhancements to JSON/JSONB processing has been massive for us. As more businesses use Postgres to handle diverse data types and build highly available architectures, the demand for tools that can visually format, edit, and sync this data skyrockets. Our Grid View and JSON editors make handling these complex data types incredibly straightforward for our users.

Which PostgreSQL extension is of most value to your company? Why and how you leverage it?

The pldbgapi extension is of immense value to our company. We leverage pldbgapi as the backbone of Navicat’s PL/pgSQL Debugger. It allows us to transform complex database logic into an intuitive, visual IDE experience where users can seamlessly set breakpoints, step through code, and inspect variables.

What does your company do for the PostgreSQL project and the tech community around it?

We are an adoption accelerator. By providing a secure, highly intuitive graphical interface, we make it dramatically easier for enterprises to migrate away from legacy proprietary databases and adopt PostgreSQL. We help grow the ecosystem by ensuring that even teams without hardcore DBA expertise can successfully manage and scale a Postgres deployment.
