Interview with DBtune

Where is PostgreSQL going to achieve a lot of progress in the next few
years? Will your company be a part of it as a contributor?
We foresee PostgreSQL’s most significant growth in mission-critical enterprise deployments and cloud-native environments where scalability and cost-efficiency are no longer optional. As organizations move away from proprietary engines, the complexity of managing large-scale PostgreSQL fleets is increasing exponentially
DBtune contributes to this growth by lowering the barrier to entry for high-performance PostgreSQL. Just as self-driving cars such as Waymo revolutionized transportation by removing human error, DBtune is creating the self-driving database. We position our Agentic AI as the "autopilot" for database health. While Postgres is incredibly powerful, we believe that 90% of users lack specialized tuning training. Our focus on AI-assisted optimization makes it easy to manage PostgreSQL at scale, ensuring that even generalist DevOps teams can achieve elite-level performance. We benefit from this growth by becoming the essential efficiency layer that allows businesses to scale their data operations without a linear increase in DBA headcount or infrastructure spend.
Does your company have a product built on top of PostgreSQL? What makes
it stand out?
Our flagship product is the DBtune AI-powered tuning engine, the industry’s first true Agentic AI for PostgreSQL.
What makes it unique is its iterative, workload-aware approach. Unlike static tools (like PGTune) that provide templatized recommendations, DBtune is an "active listener." It deploys a lightweight, open-source agent that:
- Learns your specific DNA: It analyzes your unique SQL "fingerprint" and hardware constraints.
- Optimizes in real-time: It performs safe, iterative experiments (often in reload-only mode with zero downtime) to find the perfect configuration for your specific traffic.
- Delivers proven results: Customers like Papershift and Midwest Tape have seen query runtimes drop by 50% and throughput increase by up to 10x within just a few hours.
We have already seen this impact in the real world: Papershift achieved a 50% reduction in average query runtime on AWS RDS, while Midwest Tape realized a 10x performance boost, matching the power of much larger, more expensive instances through our smarter parameter orchestration.
What does your company care for most as a business? Tell us more about
the philosophy behind it.
Our mission is to make PostgreSQL the most accessible and cost-effective data platform in the world by removing the complexity of manual tuning.
We believe that the success of Open Source is tied directly to the success of the broader economy. Today, many organizations are "driving without a license": running databases they don't have the training to tune, leading to wasted energy, bloated cloud bills, and sluggish applications.
DBtune’s goal isn’t just "Postgres success" for its own sake; it is to enable smarter, data-driven decision-making. By taking the cost and complexity out of the equation, we help a broader audience harness the full power of their data. We turn the "dark art" of database tuning into a transparent, autonomous service that drives better business outcomes and a more efficient digital economy.
